It was the week before February break and we were ready!! This week included the 100th day of school as well as Valentine's Day, oh boy! Students had the option of dressing up for the 100th day of school and many of my students came as senior citizens. Valentine's Day is a great holiday because it can be so easily incorporated into content. For math we completed a few Valentine's Day activities. For reading we are currently diving into main idea and supporting details while practicing how we can answer open response questions. To be festive, I found a nice Valentine's day information article about the history of Valentines Day (there are many of these on the internet which is great). We then marked up our article using two different colored highlighters, one for main idea and one for any supporting details. After doing so we began writing an open response to begin preparing for state testing. I allowed my students to look at the MCAS open response rubric to understand where they should attempt to be with their responses. As we move forward to April break we will continue to prepare for state testing! It was nice to use a informational article in a festive way for Valentines Day!
What a great way to be festive while preparing for MCAS! Sometimes that's what the children need. A little bit of fun to prepare for the dreaded MCAS testing.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using Valentine's Day for math concepts! In my kindergarten classroom, I decided to have my students sort hearts by color and graph it. They really enjoyed it! They liked how it was very hands-on but it was also festive for Valentine's Day.
ReplyDeleteCute idea, but so sad to teach to the test.
