Plimoth Plantation

I feel as if it is a right of passage to be in third grade and go to Plimoth Plantation as your field trip. Leading up to going, we incorporated our Pilgrim and Wampanoag instruction into our Reader's Workshop block. We began with the Wampanoag. I am fortunate that my classroom had various class sets on both the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. During reader's workshop, we had the students book shop from the selection of Wampanoag books. Book shopping was a great ways to peak engagement and get the students excited about the books they would be reading! During their independent reading time, students would read their chosen Wampanoag book and apply the mini lesson instruction to what they were reading. We did something very similar with the Pilgrims. We also have been studying character traits. When the students were reading books such as Samuel Eaton's Day and Sarah Morton's Day we had students pinpoint some of their personality and physical traits. A lot of students enjoying discussing how hard working these children were! Then students would make connected to the Pilgrim children and themselves today. This was a great way to review compare and contrast and making connects which also helped with MCAS prep!

  1. It's great that you go to Plimouth Plantation as it has gotten very expensive for a family to go. It's a great historical trip and tying it to literature makes it much more meaningful.
